Gatterberg
Like any typical type designer I am often to be found seeking inspiration in graveyards. A few years ago I was intrigued by this lettering on a family crypt in Salzburg.
Memories can be deceptive however; I had remembered it as a serif, but having returned to photograph it, then starting to create a typeface, I realised that in fact it has a sans lowercase and slab serif caps. Somehow they work together.
There were only six caps on the inscription but that was enough to provide direction. The ‘g’ may be a bit too archaic for modern tastes so an alternate variant is also included. The family comes in 4 upright styles, Thin to Bold, with a Variable font bundled free in the family pack.
